So Yasuke Simulator is going to have its first DLC. Yasuke Simulator was created by someone who saw the controversies with Assassin’s Creed: Shadows and decided to capitalize on it. Just look at the developer name: HistoryAccurateDevelopers.
At first I thought maybe this was someone who did it to troll people. Maybe an experienced game developer doing it on the side for fun. But the DLC shows that no, this guy wants money.
Which made me think: how does he make more money after Yasuke Simulator? Make Yasuke 2? The joke gets old fast. Make another historical joke game? Nobody will care. Wait for another controversy? Maybe, but you’d have to start from scratch. Because you are HistoryAccurateDevelopers. That’s all you are now.
This is the same problem as those joke accounts on social media. The ones who post daily cat photos, their account name is “Daily Cat Photos”. The ones who post Star Wars jokes, their account name is “Star Wars Jokes”. Their followers never signed up for them. They signed up for the cats.
So they cannot say, hey, I’m the person behind this account, I just started a new business, please support me. Because nobody cares about the person. Once you give yourself a label, it is very hard to remove it.
I think about this because I am also stuck. My label is just implicit. I make indie apps. I don’t do marketing. I also share home-cooked meals on the internet while most people share fast food.
Hi, nice to meet you. My name is HomeCookedMealDeveloper.
