Unpopular opinion: I think the price1 of LLM tokens will go up in the future, not down. Because almost everything else in life (groceries, housing, cars, clothes, video games, streaming services, GPUs, RAM…) has gotten more expensive over time.23456

  1. Price ≠ cost. ↩

  2. Markets don’t stay competitive forever. They become oligopolies over time. ↩

  3. The oligopolists are losing a lot of money to gain market share. Eventually they’ll want to recoup those losses. ↩

  4. Open source models are not competitive. ↩

  5. Regulation won’t protect us, especially with a “business-friendly” government. ↩

  6. Companies won’t lower prices just because they have ads. Netflix didn’t become cheaper when they added ad-supported plans. ↩
